Resident card or Working Visa to Vietnam?

Business in VietnamFor legal stay in the territory of Vietnam, there's paperwork to obtain a Resident Card or Visa. Currently, according to the Law, you can receive a Resident Card for a period of two years. For a longer period, the card can be obtained by Investors or by employees who qualify for special conditions.

People who have just arrived in Vietnam often ask what the difference is between Resident Cards and Working Visas for one year. Let’s clarify:

  • You can cross the border of Vietnam any time within timeframe of your Working Visa or Resident Card;
  • If you would like to buy personal property, like a car or a motorbike, you must have Resident Card, if you only have a Working Visa you cannot;
  • In order to apply for a visa to a third country at the consulate of that country in Vietnam, for example Schengen, you must have a Resident Card. If you only have a Working Visa, you cannot;
  • For obtaining a driving license you must have a Resident Card. If you only have a Working Visa, you cannot;
  • You can obtain temporary admission for ten years if you extend your Resident Card for a third time.

Business in VietnamTwo categories of foreigners can obtain Resident Cards or Working Visa in Vietnam - the members of the company with authorized capital of at least 12000 USD, their families, employees and families of their employees.

In order to obtain a Resident Card you have to cross the Vietnamese border by invitation from your company on the basis of work (DN), family members on the basis of an accompanying family member (TT, VR).

 

Documents required for obtaining Resident Cards or Working Visas for all categories:

For members of the company with authorized capital of at least 12 000 USD:

  1. Certificate of registration of the Company (notarized);
  2.  Passport valid not less than six months;
  3.  Work permit issued by the Labor Department of the province - this is the base  for obtaining the Resident Card  or Visa;
  4.  2 color photos 3*4 on a white background;
  5.  2 color photos 2*3 on a white background;
  6.  Registration of temporary stay (Landlord must to provide);
  7.  Copy of invitation to arrive in Vietnam from your company.

For employees:

  1. Certificate of registration of the company (notarized);
  2.  Passport valid not less than six months;
  3.  Work permit issued by the Labor Department of the province - this is the base  for obtaining the Resident Card  or Visa;
  4.  2 color photos 3*4 on a white background;
  5.  2 color photos 2*3 on a white background;
  6.  2 color photos 4*6 on a white background;
  7.  Registration of temporary stay (Landlord must to provide);
  8.  Copy of invitation to arrive in Vietnam from your company;
  9.  Medical examination;
  10.  Diploma of education;
  11.  Record of previous employment for the last three years (employment record or reference from previous employment);
  12.  Certificate of criminal record.

For accompanying family members:

In case if your spouses, children, parents, brothers and sisters follow with you, they can obtain Resident Card or Visa bases of yours for the same period.

  1. 1 Passport valid not less than six months;
  2.  2 color photos 2*3 on a white background;
  3.  Registration of temporary stay (landlord must to provide);
  4.  Copy of invitation to arrive in Vietnam from your company;
  5.  Translated and notarized certificate of registration of marriage (for spouses);
  6.  Translated and notarized birth certificate (for children, parents, brothers and sisters).

Turnaround time for Resident Card from 30 to 40 days.

Obtaining a Resident Card you must be located and do business at the legal address specified in your company’s certificate of registration, or you must have an office at this address and all documents listed above.
